In Eau Claire Wisconsin two boys aged 12 and 15 named Seyberth and Bonel were attacked by a highwayman returning home from cutting Christmas trees. They were tied and robbed before being locked in an abandoned summer house and the building set on fire. They escaped after a desperate struggle as the cottage burned.
Four died and several others were badly burned when a house burned near Summerville, Jefferson county. John Ashbaugh rescued his family before the flames forced him to flee in frigid weather. Overheated stove caused the blaze. The father dragged the injured to safety and alerted neighbors, while Mrs. Ashbaugh jumped from a second story window with a broken leg and internal injuries.
