Planned WWII memorial faces court challenge in DC
In US District Court Judge Henry Kennedy’s chamber opponents led by the National Coalition to Save Our Mail and other groups filed suit against the Interior Department. They contend the planned memorial would seize reef wall and grassy expanse from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial and block public passage between Lincoln and Washington memorials. They oppose the two rows of 17 foot columns and say the design mirrors European monuments. They seek to bar construction pending access to documents and potential injunctions to stop contracts or construction. Funding has reached about 147 million dollars with former Senator Bob Dole fundraising and President Clinton attending a Veterans Day groundbreaking.
