McKeldin protests higher Swiss watch duty in trade row

Union Head To Call Ferry Strike In East
Michiel J. Quill president of the Transport Workers Union says he will recommend a January 4 strike by ferry and tugboat workers against nine railroads affecting operations in Philadelphia Baltimore and Norfolk as well as New York. The dispute hinges on a wage offer deemed totally inadequate and negotiations have used a federal mediator since mid November. The 2,500 workers, represented by PWLMaine Local 1413, plan a Hoboken meeting at 8 pm next Tuesday to authorize action. The railroads involved include New York Central Pennsylvania Baltimore and Ohio Erie Lackawanna New Haven Lehigh Valley Central of New Jersey and Long Island. The union has cut its wage demand from 25-27 cents to 2h cents retroactive to May 20.
