Balk At Giving Truman Power
Congress moved on a $20 billion defense bill as Senate and House Republicans resisted restoring Truman era powers. Meanwhile the House approved a three year civil defense plan costing about $3.1 billion to build bomb shelters and prepare for atomic risks. Senate leaders urged swift action and proposed large increases for stockpiling critical materials, while approving the House’s $16.945 billion for armed forces. The Army would receive about $9 billion in the package.
