Miss S Katharine Burrier of the Bug Store in Middle Alley lost her purse around 5 45 p m Friday as a colored youth grabbed it while she closed her garage door. The bag held cash near $100 and papers. Earlier a Kemp store employeeWidget Edoz Myers lost a small sum. Police say cases may not be related. investigators worked the Middle Alley area.
Christmas mail has not been as heavy as expected yet the Christmas greeting surge is due any time. Postmaster James A. Grove warns many residents send late greetings to Canada and Mexico with insufficient stamps. Cards to Canada or Mexico must bear four cents. three cents on many arrivals prompts return or dead letter handling. If a return address exists, mail to Canada or Mexico is returned. without a return address, it is forwarded to the dead letter office. With Christmas a week away, distant packages should already be mailed, or air parcel post is the only fast option now. Local mail handling is solid, but other cities’ offices are jammed and may slow transit. No delay is anticipated at the local office, though a busy weekend looms after posting. Past big days were around December 16 or 11, but those days have passed without the heavy mail surge.
James Edward Boyer infant was awarded 1250 dollars in a friendly suit settlement recorded in the Court House. The defendant Albert B. Boyer drove a truck on February 25, 1958 near Mt Pleasant. the infant rover passenger sustained serious permanent injuries.

The Sealtest Foods Division of National Dairy Products Corpora tion sold the East Patrick street milk processing plant to Highs Dairy Products Corpora tion of Washington. Local operations will continue at Wisner street location as the two buildings are modernized and enlarged. The plant will process milk ice cream mix and cottage cheese for Highs 216 stores in Maryland and DC, with operations starting in spring after rapid installation of machinery from the Edmonston plan.
A head-on collision on U S 40 near Route 40A west of Frederick caused about 2000 in damage but no injuries. Theodore Dutrow 22 of Frederick, driving a 1957 Ford Victoria, crossed the centerline into Wilmer Jacobs Jr. 33 in a 1959 Chevrolet, resulting in both cars sustaining about 1000 damage each. Dutrow was charged with failing to drive to the right of center.
In Charleston West Virginia AP report Petty Foster 29 says her husband Benjamin abused her. Police find her instructing them to move a bed and pull up linoleum revealing a floor cache of 13 half-gallon jars of moonshine under a sign. Foster charged with illegal possession and bonds posted.
The Atlantic Coast states saw rains tapering off with dry weather across most regions. Snow flurries appeared in the northern Great Lakes and northern Rockies while readings fell to near zero in northern Minnesota and lingered in the teens across parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Temperatures ranged from the 20s to 60s in various zones, with 82 of 97 nations entered in Rome for the Olympics.

Montgomery County Police report two stolen vehicle cases and one apparently solved this morning. Calvin Chase, 20, jailed on unauthorized use of a vehicle, believed linked to an escape incident. Musser Brothers of Gaithersburg lost a sod truck, recovered. investigation led to Chase. Two youths allegedly stole Christmas decorations and a coat from Mrs Charles Bartholow, driving a car, gas ran out, car recovered on East Church Street.
Maj. Bryan W. Collier, 60, public relations director at The Citadel since 1955 and former newspaper man, died Friday of a heart attack in Charleston. He previously edited the Ledger and Ledger-Enquirer in Columbus Georgia and worked for papers in New York Atlanta Columbus Ohio Charleston Louisville and for The Associated Press in New York. Born in Hartwell Georgia.
AP report details a major jail riot in Kansas City Missouri as 33 inmates damaged windows and property, flooded cells, and shouted for 40 minutes before authorities used a fire hose and tear gas to quell the disturbance. Officials suspect a mass escape attempt from the courthouse on the 2th floor.
The American economy shows signs of recovery with personal income near a peak, auto production at a two year high, and steel output at record levels. Income reached about 385 billion dollars annually, aided by steelworkers’ wages, unemployment checks, and government payments. Steel production estimates hovered near last week’s record, and aluminum contracts rose while Kennecott Copper settled a four month strike.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev issued a bitter note to West German Chancellor Adenauer timed with Paris talks among Eisenhower De Gaulle and Macmillan. Flowerville AP reports a southern Michigan tragedy as a train car collision at a Chesapeake & Ohio crossing killed eight, including Clyde Ballard, 2, his wife Bertha 24, and their son Keith, all from Fenton, with a Pere Marquette passenger train striking the car at 5.44 p.m. at 65 mph. Witnesses describe the car occupied by five adults and three children and the disaster wiped out an entire family.
AP reports Cuba executed two ex-Batista era soldiers Luis Lara and Jose Morfi Reyes by firing squad at Rios Rivera Army Camp after their 2am sentence for plotting against Prime Minister Fidel Castro. The day also sees US citizens amid long prison terms for counter revolutionary activities and other convictions tied to the Caribbean Legion and anti Castro efforts.
District Engineer Thomas G Melchier said area road construction has slowed due to weather. State Roads Commission crews continue some tasks on several jobs including Middletown Burkittsville rock excavation and U S 15 and Route 194 shoulder work. Final surface on the Thurmont Emmitsburg U S 15 project will wait until next spring, with the road usable this winter. Route 19 in Carroll County is nearly finished aside from seeding and mulching of shoulders.
