Woman Burned In Kitchen Cigarette Fire At Home
A Midway woman, Hilda L. DeBerry, was burned severely when a cigarette ignited her clothes and body. She and her father Elgie DeBerry returned home after a family dispute, she dozed while smoking, and flames spread as neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Harbaugh rushed her to Frederick Memorial Hospital with burns to neck chest arms and body. The nylon dress burned away leaving only a zipper. Her condition was listed as uncertain at mid morning.

John Shellhorse Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail
Magistrate Edward D. Storm said John Shellhorse, returned from Spring Grove State Hospital yesterday, was sentenced to 30 days in the Frederick County Jail for assault and battery. Shellhorse had been charged with beating his former wife last November and found guilty. Sentencing had been delayed for a mental examination.

Head-On Collision Near Frederick Destroys Two Autos
A head on crash on U S 40 about three miles west of Frederick injured three people and destroyed two late model cars. James Arthur Stull drove a 1959 Oldsmobile and collided with Nicholas Reinholz in a 1956 Ford. The victims, Miss Mary Alice Castle and Mrs. Reinholz, suffered multiple lacerations and possible internal injuries. Rescuers freed Reinholz after 15 to 20 minutes as Trooper Spickler investigated and charges were pending. The incident occurred at 2 20 a m with the westbound lane blocked briefly.

Five Million For Colleges Proposed By Governor Tawes
Governor Tawes recommended capital improvements totaling over five million dollars for Maryland colleges and the University of Maryland for the next fiscal year.
