Plans to Clean Jail in Montgomery County
Alvie A. Moxley, set to become sheriff January 1 after last month’s election, aims to rapidly address long criticized jail conditions. He pledges sanitary improvements, better inmate meals, and seeks funds to renovate, add steel cells, and upgrade equipment. He will inspect vermin control, with or without legislature action. Moxley plans to appoint high quality deputies, including former Sheriff Clifard L. Howard and Constable J. Stanley Gingell, who will receive autos and $1,500 yearly. Additional appointees require endorsement by prominent local citizens. The Montgomery County Social Service League urged the grand jury to report insanitary jail conditions and poor food, sending copies to the circuit court judge and county commissioners.

Furloughs Hit Brunswick Baltimore and Ohio Shops
One hundred and Atty men in the car and engine repair shops of the Baltimore and Ohio at Brunswick were furloughed until January 12 as part of a nationwide cutback affecting about 5 000 workers. About nine hundred in Brunswick’s two repair shops, with roughly seventy five suspended per shop, reflect a broader trend of reduced traffic and finances. In Brunswick officials expect lifts by January 2 with safety kept intact. Similar furloughs hit Mount Clare near Baltimore and many other cities, with 1 800 off at Mount Clare and about 200 on duty.
