Guardsmen May Serve For Year
President Kennedy will decide in spring on timing for release of National Guardsmen and Reservists called up this fall. Deputy Defense Secretary Gilpatrick said the decision depends on the international situation, with a goal to keep them in uniform no longer than a year. General Van Fleet reported morale among the 156,000 troops is high, dismissing complaints as overstated and not representative of the overall unit. Wisconsin Congressman O’Konski criticized equipment shortages and questioned the duty length, while Van Fleet defended the call-up as necessary amid the Berlin crisis.
