Life Sentence For Brindle In Officer Slaying

Clarence D Brindle a 26 year old machinist was given a life term after being found guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of Howard County Patrolman Randolph E Brightwell. The case tied to the May 29 gas station incident near Ellicott City also involved John Bruce Westcoat who faces trial for the Brightwell and attendant Charles F Gallion killings.

Martinsburg to seek water board order over creek pollution

Lawyers said they will consider a Water Resources Board next week to show cause why a cease and desist order should not be issued to end the pollution of Tuscarora Creek. The hearing concerns sewage discharge from the municipal disposal plant. Mayor C Leslie Golliday called a special city council session for Friday to prepare for the Charleston hearing. Officials of Martinsburg will appear in Charleston. The council voted to increase sewer service charges by about 80 percent, a step toward funding a new disposal plant and raising about $90 000 additional annually.
