Local tax rates set for 1956 in city and county
The mayor and aldermen prepare to adopt the municipal rate tonight with a tentative max of 11 cents, lifting the city rate to about 1.50 to 2.50 dollars. The county rate, not set until next week, is expected to rise sharply due to high demand, potentially 15 cents or more, signaling high Maryland real estate taxes for residents. The meeting will include the Board of Equalization and Review and the mayor’s annual report. Income tax distributions are not expected to boost the city’s share, while county receipts exceed 200 thousand dollars, aiding the budget outlook amid slow payments on an undistributed surplus and uncollected taxes.
