48 Named Communists Identified at HUAC Hearing
Congressional investigators list 48 persons identified as Communists at the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings. A college economics teacher and his wife declined to answer questions, invoking the Fifth Amendment. Mortimer Riemer and Herbert Fuchs testified, naming many individuals tied to Communist activity in the past. Gerald J. Matchett and wife Margaret Ellen denied current Communist ties, while others denied party membership. A free kiddie show is announced for Frederick County, funded by Salvation Army and Federated Charities.
