Pittsburgh Civil Rights Congress Tied to Communist Party
UR Mathew Cvetic, ex underground Communist for the FBI in western Pennsylvania, testified that the Pittsburgh Civil Rights Congress was a hand picked Communist Party group in the 1940s. He helped found the CRC in 1947 and remained active until 1950. He said the CRC was a defense mechanism for the Party and called it our organization. He described early CRC officers as Reds and noted Communist directives for members to join. Steve Nelson, a top western Pennsylvania Communist, once directed CRC delegates for a New York Bill of Rights conference.
