Forecast That Missed On Economic Predictions
Australian economist Colin Clark sparked debate by predicting a 1954 American recession worse than 1949. The 1994 recession did not match 1949 figures, with 5.7 percent unemployment and industrial production down 14 points versus 94 in 1949. Western Europe avoided the feared downturn, gaining about 10 percent production. Clark’s forecast proved incorrect but remains noted. In Durango, Lena Maude Carson’s popcorn sack tossed from a car rolled into a lumberyard but caused no injuries.
