Cease Fire Proposal Endorsed by Nations at UN
The United States and Britain backed a proposal from 12 Asian and Middle East states to the UN General Assembly urging a cease fire in Korea. India’s Sir Benegal Rau presented the measure to the Political Committee, with China reportedly moving toward a doctrine of noninterference in the Far East. The Philippines supported the first proposal but opposed the second that would set up a committee for a broader peaceful settlement. A second related plan, sponsored by 12 countries, urged an early committee on peaceful settlement. U.S. and British support suggested quick approval.
