Unemployment Rise Hits Carroll County Industries
Carroll County faces recession effects with unemployment up from 129 to 771 applications in late November and welfare payments rising from 3,259 to 21,357 while job openings fall from 144 to 91. Needle trades suffer as 500 to 550 unemployed are seamstresses, though some consumer goods firms hold steady. Westinghouse and clothing makers cut hours. Experts expect weather and seasonal layoffs to strain claims, with expectations of a doubled unemployment load in weeks ahead.
