Cardinal Shehan finds pastoral work his greatest joy
On the 25th anniversary of his consecration, Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, 72, says his best joy comes from pastoral duties. He starts each day with mass, hears confessions, visits parishes after lunch, and seeks advice from aides, balancing doctrine with sympathetic leadership. He handled dissent from priests over birth control encyclical by interviewing each, avoiding discipline, and reporting to Rome with approval.
