Frederick County escaped a major snowstorm as temperatures rose turning snow into rain. Slushy snow covered the countryside with 1 to 3 inches. state police activated snow emergency plans at 3 am and lifted driving chains bans by 9 am. Roads crews deployed about 50 units and reported clearing by mid morning.
A 15 year old Libertytown boy confessed to stealing at least seven cars since October in the Libertytown Frederick Baltimore area. He led troopers to multiple wrecks and recoveries before being turned over to juvenile authorities.
The Western Maryland Auxiliary of the American Legion runs the Joy Shop at Cullen for 22 veterans at Victor Cullen Hospital. Members collect and wrap gifts chosen by the veterans for family members, plus personal items. The event includes a tree lighting, refreshments, and additional outreach to Montevue County home and Frederick Memorial Hospital.
In Circuit Court a $90,000 case against Thomas R. Stine is stalled as legal questions delay swearing in a 12 man jury. The suit by Mrs. Helen F. Thrasher and her late husband George Thrasher arises from a November 16, 1961 collision on South Market and South streets, with alleged excessive speed and negligence. Counsel for both sides are named and a twelve jurors list is reported.
The Senate passed a bill authorizing a major expansion of the Peace Corps and sent it to the White House. It provides 102 million dollars for the current fiscal year as Director Sargent Shriver said the corps aims for about 11,300 volunteers by the end of next August.
President-elect Chung Hee Park named Dr. Choi Doo-sun 69 premier as part of a Cabinet aimed at strengthening ties with the United States and Western allies. Clerk Ellis Wachter and Deputy Arthur Lambert may solemnize civil marriages starting next year under a Maryland act. A set fee of 19 dollars is paid to the Clerk’s Office, with eight dollars to the County Commissioners and two dollars to the Clerk’s Office. The order requires a bound record with names ages and addresses, and provides the ceremony text and procedure to be used during clerk office hours in the courthouse.
The Salvation Army reports 1103 raised so far from red kettles letters and War Cry. About 130 requests for Christmas baskets have been received with 200 baskets last year and similar expectations this year. Kettles operate Friday to 9 p.m. with two houses on North Market Street and weekend kettle events at A and P stores.
