A suit for 1,031,000 was filed in Baltimore federal court by Karl A. Stelle of New Oxford alleging John O Leatherman and Mrs Leatherman Thurmont Sheriff Buck Alexander and two Frederick justices of the peace conspired to wrong him. Stelle seeks 1 million in punitive damages and 31,000 for losses including his farm and livelihood. A separate Spokane note reports F Bert Magee 79 leaving over 2 million in estate assets probated, with trust income to widow and relatives.
Postmaster James A. Grove urges quick mailing of gift parcels and cards destined for Maryland. He warns misaddressed third class mail delays and advises using ZIP codes, first class postage, and separating local versus out of town mail. Window service extended to 5 p.m. December 14.
A 29-year-old Brunswick man, Donald Lee Sigler, was fined $50 and costs for hunting on posted private land in Magisterial Court. He pleaded guilty to the hunting charge, while an assault and battery count was acquitted after an appeal for a directed verdict. Hoffmeister, who owns land along Md. 464 near Pt. of Rocks, testified hearing gunshots and seeing three men with guns on his property. Trooper Richard E. Cook investigated the incident.
An Annapolis report says Western Fruit Growers Sales Co seeks a court order to permit its West ern Maryland Dillon orchard to shoot deer on the property to protect crops. Lawyer Paul Ottinger argues landowners should be allowed to do what is necessary. Deer damage includes apple shoots and buds. fencing costs to enclose the site could run up to 143000 dollars for about 50 miles. Officials have attempted deterrents such as noise devices and firecrackers.
Police say Nelson Thomas, 19, of Colborne Road Baltimore, and Charles H Reuner, 20, of Wicklow Road Baltimore, were charged with breaking and entering after entering the Modern Pharmacy on South Market Street. Thomas was spotted inside at 12:39 a.m. and both suspects were later arrested near East Patrick Street and West All Saints Street. Entry was through a side window. nothing was damaged or taken.
Pope Paul VI signaled willingness to meet Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras I during his January Holy Land trip to Palestine. The Vatican official said the pope informed Athenagoras of his purpose and would meet him if the patriarch travels to the region. The trip aims to advance Christian unity.

Governor Tawes urged Maryland employers to hire the physically handicapped to the limit of their abilities at a luncheon of the Governor's Committee.
