Political contests and a naturalist talk headlined at Frederick
The narrative recalls Mahoney’s long political run and party battles from 1950 onward, including unit vote dynamics and defeats by McKeldin and Byrd. It also notes Butler facing Markey in a primary and Marc Sagan of the Interior Department delivering a talk at the Frederick Bird Club with details on his education and work in the Catoctin Mountain area.

Youth Drowns Near Seneca After Boat Sinks
Four Chevy Chase youths duck hunting on the Potomac near Seneca Creek were swept by wind and choppy water when their motor boat sank. Richard Lightfoot, 21, vanished beneath the river as three companions were rescued and rushed to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. LeRoy Thrasher, 28, a Seneca resident, sped from shore in a borrowed boat to save the survivors, while Mindte, Watt, and Holmes clung to the capsized boat awaiting help. The search continued as rescue squads combed the river.

Fire Leaves Nine Homeless Near New Market
Nine members of a colored family were left homeless when a fire destroyed their two story home on the New London road near New Market late Saturday. Firefighters from Mt. Airy and New Market battled the blaze as neighbors and local agencies sprang into action to shelter and provide clothing and furniture within 24 hours. State Trooper A. D. Martin helped direct traffic while George W. Sponseller offered a vacant farm house for the family. Community groups churches and the Salvation Army collected items and aided rapid rehousing though bed clothing and utensils were still needed Sunday night. The house owner Mr Dorsey 75 escaped with his family after an oil stove ignited in an upstairs room. No total loss estimate was available. Two Frederick fire calls later Sunday reported no damage. Honolulu weather noted: 90 degrees hottest and 52 coldest in U S Weather Bureau history.
