Birth of Stars Confirmed In Collapsing Cosmic Cloud
Astronomers report a giant gas cloud in the Milky Way is collapsing and birthing dozens of stars at once. Using the Very Large Array and Hat Creek Observatory, James M. Jackson and colleagues track inward motion of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, confirming a long-suspected star formation theory. The core hosts a ring of hot young stars about 40,000 suns in mass, shining a million times brighter than the Sun. Research led by William J. Welch of UC concludes the findings provide a coherent, first concrete picture of star formation.

Nexrad weather radar network planned to cover 90 percent
The National Weather Service orders 195 Nexrad radars costing about 2.5 million dollars per set to monitor severe weather across 90 percent of the contiguous United States plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Beginning 1990, first units start at Norman Oklahoma with more in Melbourne Florida and Washington DC, expanding to eight midwestern radars and nationwide coverage while leaving some sparsely populated areas unserved.

Shower of small comets may have produced giant craters
Voyager II data suggest tiny ice coated comets with no tail created craters on the Moon, Earth, Mercury, and Mars over 3.2 billion years. The shower could form craters from 1,500 feet to 2 miles across, with Earth impacts roughly every 5 to 8 years for the smallest comets and about every 10,000 years for the largest.
