U S NATO defense outlays exceed one trillion dollars
NATO's 15 members have spent about 1% trillion on defense over 21 years, with the United States contributing roughly three quarters of the total. In 1949 U S spending dominated at 72 percent, and by 1970 the U S share rose to about 74 percent as European members grew wealthier and reduced non European armaments.
