Senate Passes Reduced Money Bill After Nixon Veto
The Senate approved a $127.7 billion spending bill for independent government offices despite Nixon vetoing it in August. The measure, 74 to 1, trims about $300 million from the rejected version and remains $241.3 million above Nixon’s request. Reductions include $150 million each for urban renewal and rural water and sewer grants. Nixon argued the bill was too costly and the House had backed the veto.
