Tranquilizers Fail to Improve Birds in Maryland Study
Researcher Dr. R D Creek at the University of Maryland tests on Arbor Acre White Rock chickens show tranquilizers do not boost growth or feed efficiency. Large sedative doses risk ill effects and reduced fertility, though a sedative reduced feather picking in some pheasants. Hysteria among broilers remains a concern and federal guidance is cited.

Younger Farmers CAN Make It
Postwar data show young farmers match or exceed older groups in building and running efficient farms. In 1960 they operated at similar scale to middle-aged farmers, renting more land and owning less, yet passed more production risks to landlords. Mortgage debt largely owed to former landowners aided favorable credit terms.

Feeder Pig Production Seen as Good Bet for Maryland Farms
University of Maryland livestock expert Dr. James R. Ferguson says feeder pig production is a low-investment, flexible enterprise driven by management. He notes a strong market with over 300,000 feeder pigs moved into Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New England, and 19,000 head shown in Maryland demonstrations this year. Maryland sales in 1964 averaged 14.15 dollars per head, totaling about 63,900 dollars, making feeder pigs a viable grazing option for many farms.
