Pioneer III burns and plunges in North Africa test
Washington AP reports the Army's Pioneer III probe reached 66.654 miles altitude and slowed, then plunged through Earth's atmosphere, burning up over North Africa after a fuel cutoff three seconds early. Maj. Gen. Medaris called the test completely successful for its primary objective to map the radiation band, but the secondary orbit goal failed due to slow velocity and off course path.
