Thieves Hit Seattle Blue Mailboxes With Cars and Sledgehammers
Thieves in Seattle damage the city’s new high security mailboxes by smashing, ripping, and beating them open. Six boxes fell to theft over the weekend, including four ripped from pads and two smashed with crowbars or hammers. Postal workers rolled out a 2 million dollar program to replace 3,500 blue boxes from Everett to Tacoma after a wave of thefts and a ring exploiting a master key. Residents express frustration as the Postal Service adds hardened locks and bolted boxes to curb raids and speed replacements.
