Maternal tissue helps kidney transplants from siblings
A UW Madison study in the New England Journal of Medicine finds kidney recipients fare better when the donor is a sibling who inherited maternal tissue antigens. Lead author William Burlingham notes adding maternal HLA typing could expand the donor pool by identifying optimally matched siblings. The 205-patient study spans 1966 to 1996 across centers in the Netherlands and the United States, showing 19 percent higher five-year and 28 percent higher ten-year survival with maternal antigen–matched kidneys.
