Knoxville boy pleads guilty to killing woman
Bruce R. Shifflett, 14, of Knoxville, pleaded guilty in Circuit Court to second degree murder for the March stabbing death of 69 year old neighbor Mrs. Melinda Bean. The plea ends the planned jury trial and carries up to 30 years. Shifflett confessed after police interrogation and his prior innocent pleas were withdrawn. He was tried as an adult under state law and will be sentenced soon after evaluations and a court-ordered review.

Shelter bid approved in county vote for Humane Society project

The panel aims to trim costs by about 13,000 by removing siding, flooring, and a sound system, with the Humane Society contributing 65,000 and operating the facility.
