Outdoor editor reports a record deer harvest for Frederick County for the second straight year. As of 8 p.m. Saturday unofficial counts at three checking stations show 358 bucks registered during the week long gunning season, ahead of last year’s 314. Opening day yielded 200 bucks. the rest were taken over the next six days amid cool, snowy-to-clear weather.
Testimony in Gov. Marvin Mandel’s political corruption trial was set to continue amid a flurry of developments. Judge Pratt planned a bail review for Walter Weikers on a jury tampering charge while jurors face changes after dismissals and new bribery allegations involving a New Jersey man and a go-between. The five codefendants are accused of mail fraud and racketeering in a complex favor-trading scheme linked to Mandel’s efforts to win legislative benefits for Marlboro.
Report notes Liberal Democrats lose control after a Japanese election while other briefs note awaited auto air bag ruling in AS AUTO and a Texas murder execution halted by the Supreme Court. Weather forecast calls for increasing clouds with highs in the 40s and tonight’s low near 76 with rain ending Tuesday and winds turning colder later. Benjamin Disraeli is cited on readiness and opportunity.
The Frederick County School Board heard updates on classroom sizes with 24 elementary schools averaging 24.1 students per class from an equated enrollment of 10,750 and 383.5 teachers. 142 new teachers were hired in the 197 school year. Beverly Stonestreet, FCTA president, urged “decent class sizes” as a priority. Continued on Page 3-2.
The county saw a mild warmup with temperatures near 40 degrees after a week of cold. Overnight lows around 20 left icy windshields for motorists as rain and sleet were forecast this afternoon with warmer, wet weather to follow. Christmas shoppers found relief in the milder air, purchasing trees from Frederic's cut sites while evergreen shipments continued.
President elect Jones faces questions on a tax cut for 1977. Carter says it is too early to decide and will consult Congress. Bert Lance bets a tax rebate up to 15 billion dollars could be fastest stimulus. Commerce surveys indicate business spending may rise in six months, with unemployment at 8.1 percent.
Democratic candidates including Phillip Burton Jim Wright and John McFall seek the No 2 spot in the House with secret ballots. McFall faces questions after a $4000 donation from South Korean businessman Tongsun Park, but says funds were used for official purposes.
President elect Carter and aide Hamilton Jordan said the Cabinet and top posts are being narrowed to about 70 potential nominees. John Doar is among candidates for attorney general and Rep. Bob Bergland is considered for agriculture secretary. Mondale активно involved in the talent hunt as Carter takes time to decide. Carter will be in Washington for meetings, with sessions possible.
A county health spokesman said one fourth of the population has been immunized against swine flu with no serious reactions. About 28 people were vaccinated at Winchester Hall, far fewer than 1,700 at the prior clinic. Children accounted for about 200 of the recipients. A new clinic runs today at Thurmont Middle School from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. for anyone over three. Additional clinics follow Dec 7 and 12 at multiple locations including Brunswick Ambulance Hall and Woodsboro Fire Hall.
