Bonus Rule Split Looms In Major Minor Pact Debates
At Jacksonville on December 6 1948 minor leagues pushed to trim major league rosters to 28 by opening day in a bid to funnel talent downward. The major minor pact awaits approval at Chicago meetings next week with a May 15 cut to 25 and two to four players moving to the minors. Minor leaders also urged syncing winter meetings in the same city and changed the league name to professional baseball agreement. In Melbourne on December 7 1948 the Olympics faced bitter protests as Soviet Union led in the unofficial team standings with a sharp critique of judging amid gold medal surges and calls for stricter scoring across gymnastics wrestling and diving.

Indians Send Trade Offers to Red Sox and Tigers
In Chicago at the winter meetings, the Indians proposed sending pitcher Mike Garcia to Detroit and slugger Al Rosen to Boston for a starting catcher. A separate offer would swap Rosen to the Red Sox for catcher Sammy White, with other moves discussed between Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Minor league actions trimmed the 1956 player limits and highlighted top batting averages and team records as awards were announced in Miami Beach.
