Stowaway Nearly Starved Hidden Aboard Freighter

Robert Lesle, 80, survived 14 days in the hold of the British steamer Rappahannock while at sea after slipping aboard in Liverpool. He hid among merchandise for ten days, shouted for help with no success, and was found in an almost dying condition weighing about 60 pounds, having weighed 140 pounds on arrival in Liverpool.

Blaze Causes $100000 Damage to Baltimore Firms

A fire in Baltimore on December 7 damaged the Fridenwald Printing Company and Frank and Adier's wholesale shoe store at the corner of Eutaw and Baltimore streets. The blaze began in the bindery on the building's fourth floor, a five story brick structure. Building damage is about $15000, while Frank and Adier's losses mainly stemmed from water.

Desperate Burglar Escapes After Wounding Two

In Buffalo on December 7 a burglar seriously wounded two men then fled. Engineer Emil Hetlix was struck in the face with a hammer and Patrolman John W. Casey was knocked unconscious with an iron bat and beaten with his own club. The burglar broke into Stodart’s drag star cash drawer, fought with Hetlix, and fled into the New York Central shed after striking Casey. Casey’s condition is listed as serious.
