Harrington cites Gov McKeldin campaign pledges to cut sales and real estate taxes, noting a 15 million dollar surplus at inauguration in 1951 that vanished as expenditures rose. He contends four years saw a 30 million dollar deficit and accuses Republicans of mismanagement and hiding the truth while the budget remained the governor’s sole responsibility.
Baltimore December 5. Governor McKeldin’s charge that Democrats in the last campaign underestimated the state deficit draws sharp rebuttal from T. Barton Harrington, Democratic State Central Committee chairman. Harrington says Maryland taxpayers are overburdened and will view the governor’s remarks not facetiously.
The piece argues that the Marvy-Yand taxpayer, already burdened with taxes, will resist new levies and criticizes Gov. Mckheldin for not communicating the state’s finances before the election. It labels the Republican stance as a shield for taxpayers against higher taxes. The report also notes Salvation Army basket collections by local groups and upcoming fund drives by Eastern Star and Junior Women’s Club with Jaycees.
Applications for Christmas baskets are being received by the Salvation Army daily from 9 to 11 a.m. The deadline to apply is December 15. All applications must be made in person and will be screened closely to prevent duplication, Lieut. Powell said.
