President tells Congress he regards the Washington Arms Conference as a gratifying world achievement. England recognizes Ireland as an independent state, with a formula on allegiance pleasing both sides. Ulster may withdraw its military forces within one option remains unclear.
Dublin reports that Ireland will be officially called the Irish Free State under yesterday's London agreement announced by Lord Chancellor Birkenhead. The accord, reached at a late conference, marks a new constitutional status for Ireland within the British realm.
London reports a remarkable accord between English and Irish delegates in the small hours. Key points include Ireland as an independent state with allegiance settled, Ulster included with a one month opt out, Ireland free to tariff policy, naval control of ports, withdrawal of British forces from Ireland under safeguards, and peaceful conditions. Ratification remains by Dail Eireann and British Parliament. Delegates congratulated as Cabinet calls the outlook brightest.
A draft agreement received unanimous approval and Prime Minister Lloyd George along with the delegation were congratulated for the successful negotiations.
Washington, Dec. Resignation of George McBride as manager of the Washington American League Baseball Club was announced today by club president Clark Griffith. McBride, who took the post at the start of 1921, resigned due to ill health after a head injury from a thrown ball last summer.
Washington December 6 Secretary Fant of the Interior reports a vast untapped public domain wealth of at least 150 billion dollars from 400 million acres. Coal and oil dominate with deposits estimated at 116 billion long tons and 1 325 000 000 barrels plus shale oil. Royalty potential totals about 12 387 509 000 across coal oil shale phosphate waterpower and other resources for federal ownership including Alaska and Indian reservations.
New York December 6. Selling of Baldwin Locomotive International Harvester and Sears Roebuck unsettled the stock market during the first hour of the morning. The four and one half opening rate for call money prompted short coverings.
President Harding told Congress in his annual message that a world restoration program may be possible through the Arms Conference. He urged action on permanent tariff debt refunding and hinted at tax program revisions. He supported merchant marine expansion without heavy public treasury burden and promoted cooperative marketing, transportation, distributed industry and highway building to aid agriculture and population growth.
