Ships return home as Persian Gulf sailors reunite
Hundreds of families from Virginia to Florida welcomed fathers and brothers back from six months in the Persian Gulf. The USS Klakring and USS Hawes docked in Charleston while USS Kidd tied up in Norfolk, with crews including detachments from Helicopter Anti Submarine Squadrons 42 and 44 and the USS Flatley. The Kidd led the attack on an Iranian oil platform, sank a minelayer, and fired on two interceptors. In Charleston, children cheered as ships neared, and sailors reunited with newborns after long separations.
