Medicare beneficiaries will face a $60 daily hospital deductible starting in January, up from $52, based on rising 1969 hospital costs. The change, mandated by law, ties to average per diem rates and adjusts related costs for long stays and extended care, with daily charges increasing for stays beyond 60 days and 20 days in extended care.

Ex GI Dennis Conti testifies at Lt. Calley court martial, estimating My Lai toll near 300 and naming Calley as a major contributor. He describes Calley firing at civilians and shouting to kill. Conti, a 2 year veteran in Calley's unit, says he saw Calley shoot near the trail intersection and drainage ditch. The total death toll around My Lai remains debated between 280 and 500.
Saigon AP reports the first flight of GIs taking two weeks extra leave from Vietnam departed for the United States. Nearly 250 service members aboard. Most cannot spend Christmas at home as their two weeks end December 19. The liberalized policy began November 16, allowing two weeks leave in the United States during a one-year Vietnam tour, in addition to a prior one week. Eligibility requires four to eight months in Vietnam and a paid return ticket or proof of transport back. Free military flights may be possible, but not guaranteed.
Roberta Scott of Wichita poster girl for a drive to aid retarded children may visit the White House despite Nixon canceling a picture taking ceremony. Len Huey Scott’s mother said Robert J. Dole promised help in arranging the visit after a Friday call.
Governor Marvin Mandel was hurt in a crash on U S 301 near Mitchellville when the unmarked state police car he rode in collided with another vehicle. The driver of that car, Stephen Bugos of Bowie, was pronounced dead on arrival at Prince Georges General Hospital. Mandel and a state police lieutenant suffered facial cuts and other injuries and were treated and released.
A cool front brought sun to Frederick area with deer hunters on the last hunt day. The weatherman expects increasing clouds and a chance of showers this afternoon, then snow flurries. A 19 year old Thurmont youth escaped serious injury after his car went out of control in a high speed chase by Maryland State Police one mile east of Frederick on Gas House Pike. He refused treatment for cuts to his right hand and was charged with excessive speed and failing to keep right. Police noted Johnson was in a drag race with another car and lost control after a sharp curve, hitting trees and sliding down an embankment. further early morning accidents were being investigated on Route 464 near Brunswick Emmitsburg Sabillasville Thurston Road south of Urbana and Paynes Hill.
Frederick Lions Club Pancake Day championship ended in a tie at Evangelical Reformed Church after Lion President Edwin Sears admitted fudging. Sears and pancake day chairman Willard Hormne both ate 21 pancakes. Sears claimed extra edge by consuming slightly more prize sausage at home.
Pope Paul VI ended a 10 day 28000 mile ecumenical trip to the Far East returning to the Vatican in a dawn arrival at Rome Fiumicino Airport. An open limousine rode through a whipping wind as about 200 people including many nuns lit candles and shouted Viva il Papa.
Jefferson and Lewistown Volunteer Fire Companies were admitted to Frederick County Volunteer Firemen's Association by unanimous vote at a special meeting at New Midway Fire Hall on Thursday December 3. Committees inspected properties facilities and equipment. bases stations will be installed. Officers named for Lewistown include President James S Grimes Vice President Donald K Coyle and Secretary John W. Moore.
