New chain letter scam pops up in Washington note
Washington Notebook reports a revived chain-letter scheme starting in the Pentagon where a colonel allegedly earned $4,000. Buyers pay five dollars then mail five to the top of an eleven-name list, add their name, cross off the prior holder, and repeat. Post Office officials warn it violates postal laws and is a lottery. The piece also covers tax law revisions, housing programs, and remarks by FBI Director Hoover on liberalism and communism, plus a lens on vocabulary and a noted leaf discovery in Greenville, Pa.
