Hundreds greet Santa as Frederick hosts Christmas parade

The Frederick Christmas parade opened the season as snow fell briefly and crowds filled Market Street. Officer Arnold Simmons led the procession with Santa Claus on a truck sleigh, Majorettes Jamale Faust and Patsy Rice, and the Frederick High School Band. Candy canes were handed out until Santa replenished his supply, drawing a larger-than-expected audience from across the region. City officials noted it was the biggest pre-holiday crowd yet and stores prepared for strong holiday sales with extended hours. City lights, repairs to the White Way, and the Retail Division of the Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event with Bay Scouts assisting.

Babson Outlines 1954 Business Outlook and Reforms

Babson argues that 1954 may see more business failures as 700 firms fold monthly and 7,500 total failures trigger a demand for cost cutting and efficiency. He notes high education and population growth may help, but deflationary pressures from defense cuts, stockpiles, and peacetime scaling will require better selling, reduced waste, and higher productivity to preserve growth. The auto, building, steel, and nonferrous sectors will feel the pinch first, while baby boom demand, savings, and expansion-ready credit offer supporting forces.
