Landis to reopen Cox betting case with new hearing
New York December 2 Major League Baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis ordered a fresh hearing on the gambling allegations involving Philadelphia Phillies president William D Cox. Cox had admitted making bets during his tenure, but later denied the statements. Landis set the hearing for tomorrow and summoned several Phillies officials to attend. The Phillies elected R. M. Carpenter Jr. as president after Cox resigned to focus on his lumber business. Also reported: Indian Bob Johnson was traded to the Boston Red Sox from the Washington Senators. The majors approved 21 night games for 1944 for the Browns and Cardinals, allowed unlimited arc light games for Washington after May 4, kept a 25-man limit, and tentatively awarded the All-Star game to Pittsburgh for July 11.
