The region endures continued cold with a west moving low pressure bringing light snow this afternoon or tonight though forecasters warn such snow can be deceptive. Temperatures hover near freezing with lingering snow cover from last weekend and steady clouds keeping temperatures from rising much.
Joseph M. Kline of this city is reappointed by the Board of County Commissioners to the Frederick County Metropolitan District and Sanitary Commission. His six year term runs from now. the trio also includes James H. Grove as chairman and Noah E. Kefauver Jr. with terms expiring in 1966 and 1968 respectively.
Edwin F. Nikirk has been retained as defense attorney for Harry Jacob Cole a local taxi driver charged with the fatal shooting of Homer Lee Harris on November 18. Nikirk said he would seek a preliminary hearing date after completing his initial investigation.
Warner L. Brittain, president of the Frederick YMCA, says groundbreaking for the new YMCA building will occur in 1964 with occupancy planned for 1965. A $150,395.53 fundraising total is noted from 3,644 pledges, with 1,711 paid and 1,933 active to be paid over three years.
Postmaster James A Grove reports the Red Cross Bloodmobile visit to Thurmont yielded 92 pints, far below the expected total. Of 240 pledged residents, only 81 kept appointments. 36 requested rescheduling or medical removal. 123 did not respond. 15 walked in, including 10 new donors. Seven donations were deferred and seven directed replacements occurred.
The County Commissioners host a 7:30 p.m. meeting in the Hiram Winchester Room to seek ideas on revenue options beyond real estate and trailer taxes. The majority held the local constitution allows opting out of operating public schools, while Chief Justice Yeagerston dissented, arguing the legislature must provide public education in counties that abandon it.
