In Boston Carmen Basilio defeated Tony DeMarco in the 12th round to retain the welterweight title. The Marine from Canastota rallied after a seventh round knockdown and a fierce exchange, finishing with a brutal right hand that felled DeMarco. The crowd of 13,373 set a record gate for Boston, and judges' scores showed Basilio trailing before the late surge.
