Police Pay Held Too Low
ROCKVILLE Md Nov 30 Councilman Robert T Saure warned salaries for Montgomery County Police are too low during a two hour meeting with the Personnel Board which set county worker scales. He noted many policemen work off hours elsewhere to support families. County privates start at 33 594 versus 3 399 in Washington and 3 300 in Prince George's County. The Council also approved recruiting for a county health officer and thanked Board Chairman Lewis B Sims as his term expires. A public hearing for Jan 10 on a zoning amendment to retire a community pool club rule was scheduled. The Council urged federal civil defense officials to reconsider moving the Civil Defense College from Olney Md to Battle Creek Mich and appointed Joseph M O Connell of Silver Spring as administrative assistant to the deputy director of civil defense at 4 076.

German conductor dies of pneumonia in Baden
Wilhelm Furwaengier, 68, a noted German orchestra conductor, died of pneumonia in Baden. His independence provoked friction with both the Nazi and anti Nazi factions. Plans were under discussion to take his Berlin Symphony Orchestra, about 110 members, to the United States next year, a country he had not always viewed favorably.
