Today for Western Maryland counties expect partly sunny skies with highs in the low to mid 80s and south winds around 10 mph. Tonight showers or thunderstorms are possible with 40 percent odds and lows near 60 as winds shift to northwest. Tuesday brings partly sunny, slightly cooler conditions with highs in the upper 70s and northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Maryland Mountains see similar patterns with partly sunny skies, 30 percent shower chances, highs mid to upper 70s, tonight a 30 percent evening shower chance, and cooler Tuesday with highs upper 60s and northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Yesterday temperatures ranged Frederick 81, Westminster 79, Hagerstown 84, Cumberland 86 with lows 48 to 54. Extended forecast calls for partly cloudy midweek and highs mid-70s to low 80s, cooler in the mountains.
Fire calls reported through 8 p.m. Sunday include 2:22 a.m. building fire on 7th St at Maxwell Ave with Juniors United Citizens and Independents responding. 3:53 a.m. apartment fire at 352 W Patrick St with United Citizens Independents and Juniors assisting. 12:29 p.m. automobile fire in Days Inn parking lot on Md 85 with United responding. 2:02 p.m. brush fire at Powell Rd and Colonial Ave with Lewistown ambulance noted.
A 32-year-old Riverdale man Clarence J. Garris of 5405 56th Place drowned when his canoe overturned in the C and O Canal just south of Swain's Lock Saturday. He was recovered near River Road and pronounced dead at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda after about 5 p.m. Firefighters also responded to a second fire at David Scull Recreation Center in Rockville earlier that day. cause believed to be discarded smoking materials with $50,000 building and $10,000 contents damage.
A one year old Holstein heifer named Star visits the Frederick County Courthouse front lawn under mayoral permission for a one hour photo session. Cattle photographer Jack Remsberg plans a Holstein World cover shot for the 75th Maryland Holstein Association anniversary. Star will later appear in the Maryland State Fair senior calf class.
