Winners Of Dairy Contest Announced
Winners of the sixth annual Maryland Efficient Dairy Production contest are announced by J. R. Schabinger University of Maryland Extension dairyman. First place goes to Edward F Ortman Monkton Baltimore County with others from Carroll Howard Worcester Kent Anne Arundel and Cecil counties. Ortman uses home grown grains good pastures and a simple 14 percent protein grain ration achieving nearly 10 000 pounds of four percent milk from 33 Guernseys last year. DHIA supervisors receive prizes for book completeness and reports.

Forty nine vocational agriculture instructors from 47 Maryland high schools completed a week long farm mechanics workshop at the University of Maryland College Park. Ray W. Carpenter noted emphasis on farm machinery tractors and welding. The program aimed to improve training for hundreds of high school students. Organizers included Guy W. Minimum price support rates set for Maryland corn
Maryland announces minimum price support rates for the 1954 corn crop. Chairman George J. Martin of the State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee says rates are based on the nationwide minimum support of 1.62 dollars per bushel announced March 19 and notes further details will follow.

Maryland Seeks Adjustments in Corn Parity Rates
Maryland announces two corn parity support rates by county type with commercial counties set at 1.78 per bushel and non commercial counties at 1.34 per bushel. The ASC chair says rates may be revised this fall if the October parity percentage exceeds 1.62, with adjustments calculated by the Grain Division of the USDA. Maryland commercial counties include Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Annes, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico and Worcester. Shortage of hay reported in College Park as dry weather hits Maryland winter feeding. Soybeans offered as alternative hay. soybeans cut to yield 1-3 tons per acre. Milk cow population in June at 22.5 million, up slightly from a year ago.
