Mrs. George Birely of East Patrick Street renewed her presidency of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the American Legion, Department of Maryland, for a sixth consecutive term at the Annapolis convention. Mrs. Claggett Ramsburg was re elected state treasurer. The gathering, tied to the Legion, saw membership rise from 265 to 550.
Chicago Aug 80 AP An engine and fireman died in a collision when a Pennsylvania freight locomotive crashed into a Rock Island passenger train near Braverly Hills station. Fireman Joseph Risberg and engineer Stewart Kaufman were killed. freight engineer A A Matthews was fatally injured. several passengers and crew were injured by flying glass.
Otto Vierkoeten of Germany completed a record setting English Channel swim from Cape Gris Nez to Langdon Stairs Dover landing at 2 15 pm after starting at 1 35 am. The 12 hours 40 minutes time beat Miss Gertrude Ederle's 14 31 record by nearly two hours with a few soldiers witnessing the crossing.
