In Pike County Arkansas excitement mounts over revealed diamond bearing rocks near Murfreesboro. A company forms to develop the field after John Wesley Huddleston found a crystal that cut glass. Diamonds have appeared in surface and subsurface deposits with the largest stones near six and a half carats and several one to two carat gems.
Pablo Huerta, a Mexican wood peddler, fell into a canyon while foraging for wood. He discovered a silver ore ledge at his feet, had samples assayed as extremely rich, and was offered about 25000 dollars for the bare prospect. Huerta planned to develop the mine with investors and promised gifts to friends once wealth returns.
Iowa plans a new gray draft horse breed supported by a $5000 state appropriation to the State Agricultural College. Professors Kennedy and Curtiss will develop a gray type by crossbreeding Clyde Shire and Percheron Belgians, aiming for higher market values. Kennedy returned from Europe with foundation stock including Clyde and Shire animals to establish the program.
Nashville dispatch reports Indiana pastor Rev William Grabb of the Church of the Firstborn in Nashville Indiana wrapped venomous rattlesnakes around his neck to prove divine protection. He claims true worshipers cannot be harmed and demonstrated handling snakes, drawing converts as sinners moved to the mourners bench after the event.
Two Oxford county girls driving from Hartford to Bear Pond report a small bird dog barking at a woodchuck high in a pine. The chuck, about fifteen feet up, was knocked down by a pole used by one girl and dispatched by the dog. It seems the woodchuck climbed a nearby hemlock before leaping to the pine to escape.
The latest British warships have been fitted to carry a large quantity of oil to be used with coal, enhancing endurance and range for battles at sea.
The capital parade along Broad Street drew about 12,000 members with 40 bands and seven fife and drum corps. Floats featured Betsy Ross and the Goddess of Liberty with women in white. The pageant ended with a return march past Carpenter and Race streets as governor Stuart reviewed the procession. The next state convention will be held in Hazleton.
The Niagara express between Buffalo and Pittsburg left the rails at Centreville, 30 miles north of Ol City, Pa. The train, racing at 40 mph, derailed its forward engine and slid along the ties for about a quarter of a mile before stopping. no injuries were reported though passengers from Chautauqua lake excursion were shaken up.
Worcester Mass August 30 All horses in the Labor Day parade must wear shoes nailed on by union journeymen and bear the union label. If any shoe is non union the horse is disqualified. A five member committee from the horseshoers union will inspect horses before the parade to ensure union status.
Commerce Ga Aug 30 James Wright a wealthy planter hanged himself in the front yard after a quarrel with his wife who pleaded with him not to kill himself. He died as she vowed the quarrel would end.
Pittsburg August 20 fire and police officials report a mysterious caving in of a street over 600 feet in the suburbs causing many houses to topple. Hundreds of residents fled in panic to other quarters. Authorities know of no precise cause and note the unusual loss of wolves in the area.
Troy New York August 30 Nelson Piercy of Hoosick Falls was thrown from his sulky during a race at the Washington county fair in Sandy Hill and killed as his horse stumbled and fell on the track.
New York dispatch reports Dr. Asher Gluck known as Chief Architect of the New Race promises a perfect child can be created by 15 months of “perfect living.” He says a healthy couple following his guidance could produce a talking child with adult brain and five year stature, with a $10,000 to $30,000 wager in a New York bank. Gluck, Chicago based, aims to recruit followers for his simple life creed.
American League results include New York 5 over Athletics 2 and Washington 3 over Boston in 1st game of a doubleheader, with a 2 1/2 game. Detroit 4 over St. Louis 3 and Cleveland 4 over Chicago 1. National League games show Philadelphia 3 over Pittsburg 2, Chicago 5 over Brooklyn 0, Boston 3 in 8 innings over an unspecified opponent. Tri-State and Atlantic League results list multiple scores including Reading 7 Easton 2 and Tamaqua 14 over Allentown 2. Brooklyn 5 over Newark 3.
In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania two of four Erie Coal company miners entombed at No 14 tunnel near Pittston were recovered locked in each other’s arms. James O Boyle and Peter Flynn suffered facial injuries but were not badly bruised otherwise. Koenig and Groegler remain behind the fall. Also reports: cable tolls cost 212 dollars for a Vienna letter from Atlantic City. Two boys aged 18 on the Hamburg American liner Patricia commit suicide at sea. Baruch Jaffe and Heinrich Herke jump overboard.
Edward Phillips a clerk for G B Salisbury & Co is arrested in police court charged with stealing 9000 of his employer funds. Police state Phillips confessed claiming he started by betting on horse races and ended up speculating in bucket shops.
In Washington Pennsylvania on August 30 Professor R E Warner from Donora high school Mrs George Pennington of Carmichaels and Mrs Elizbeth Strathern of Pittsburgh were seriously injured when horses drawing their carriage bolted after seeing a passing automobile. All suffered non fatal injuries. In Buffalo on the same date a blowoff tank exploded at the Buffalo Candy company plant scalding one man to death Fireman Joseph Hoffarth and Peter Smith attempted to halt further disaster. Philadelphia August 30 109 workers in the bureaus of highways and street cleaning were ordered to resign or face dismissal by William R Benson acting for Director of Public Works George R Stearna. Every employee was affected on probation with a broader purge planned. The scrubwoman in street cleaning was the sole exception.
Hotel keeper Thomas Lavelle of Girardville near Pottsville shot and killed his sister Mary while she slept then shot himself. Believed to be temporarily insane he died later in hospital. The sister lay in bed with a bullet wound to the left temple. Lavelle was removed to a hospital. Also reported is the drowning of Dutch consul Broer B. Haagsma in St. Louis aged 76. his son doubts suicide, citing mental aberration.
Chicago Aug 30 Judge Koblsaat issues a temporary injunction against 14 western railroads and five express companies restraining them from establishing September 1 a new rate on shipments of cream milk and butter. The complainants are 14 creameries charging the railways and express firms with coercive pricing to drive creameries out of business.
