Tawes Unopposed By State's Republicans
Baltimore on August 28 the Republican State Central Committee rejected nominating a candidate to oppose Democratic incumbent Tawes for comptroller in November. Bonnell, chairman of the Republican State Finance Committee, resigned, and a special committee was named to find a successor. The decision passed 29 to 19, leaving Tawes likely to win without opposition if no petition candidacy arises. Also, the Senate sent to the President a bill authorizing a new Washington area airport after minor House amendments.
