Parkway Bill Now In Senate

The House passed a bill to authorize acquisition of land to widen the Federal parkway corridor along the old Chesapeake and Ohio Canal from Great Falls to Cumberland. The measure envisions a four lane, 80 foot wide parkway with overpasses and access points at Seneca, Edward Ferry, Point of Rocks, Brunswick, Williamsport, Hancock, Paw Paw, and Cumberland, linking to US 40 and local roads. The plan would use 76 miles of canal right of way, with about 11,900 acres needed from Maryland, and would involve restoring portions of the canal for boating while creating a scenic motor route for an estimated regional population of millions. The bill, initiated by Rep Beall, moves to the Senate for consideration.
