Hurricane Dennis approaches the United States prompting a hurricane warning for the northwestern Bahamas and a hurricane watch in parts of Florida, while Hurricane Cindy remains active.
Bahamas residents brace as Hurricane Dennis strengthens toward a possible U S strike. Warnings extend along the eastern seaboard. Dennis, a 90 mph hurricane, could reach Category 3 status and threaten Florida and the Carolinas, prompting guard and trooper alerts and mass preparations.
Maryland sees scattered relief from a weeks long drought as recent rains fall short of ending dry conditions. officials warn several months of above average rainfall are needed to replenish groundwater and reservoirs while state officials ease some drought rules for sod farms and landscaping.
Maryland s Department of the Environment tentatively approves a wastewater discharge permit for Rodney Harbaugh to expand his seven acre hog farm on Old Frederick Road from about 2300 to 4000 hogs pending a Sept 30 public hearing at Frederick City Hall. The permit imposes odor control and nuisance safeguards, requires an odor management plan, and mandates disposal of manure by spreading on an area farm amid neighbor complaints of persistent smells from barn storage and gas byproducts.
Middletown High School unveils a 4 million renovation featuring a valley view, cleaner carpets and open classrooms with hard walls in some areas. The project is part of three major additions ready for students, each adding 300 seats and moving nearly all portable classrooms to other schools. Windsor Knolls Middle and Walkersville High also expand to house more students under one roof, with Windsor Knolls adding nine new classrooms and capacity for 600. Phase II at Urbana Elementary related to Windsor Knolls includes an auxiliary gym, music room and more tech space, aiming for completion by November.
County health officials lifted the boil water advisory for 700 Walkersville residents using well water. Health officer Dr. James Bowes said boiling is no longer required. The advisory had followed a blasting company project on the Sun Mead development.
