Stratford festival in crisis and triumph in Tempest year
Lucian Warren reports Stratford Ontario’s festival faced internal strife over leadership and budgets during 1980 81 while staging acclaimed productions including Coriolanus The Visit and The Misanthrope. The crisis spurred a reshuffle led by John Dexter and John Hirsch amid clashes with Canadian actors and immigration rules. Stratford drew 500000 visitors and $30 million in economic impact, as tourism staff expanded programs and justified the town’s arts business hybrid.
