Government Regs On Prescribing Liquor For Medical Use
The Commissioner of Internal Revenue issued rules allowing physicians to prescribe wines and liquors for internal or external medical use. Each prescription must be in duplicate, signed in the physician’s handwriting, with a maximum one quart per patient at a time. Prescriptions require patient name, address, date, illness, and pharmacist name. Physicians must maintain per patient records and pharmacists must keep copies and report monthly totals. Pharmacists may dispense only if named in handwriting, have a permit, and are registered retail liquor dealers with tax. Refills are not allowed, and pharmacists must refuse if abuse or illegitimate use is suspected.
