An inmate from Springfield State Hospital, Sykesville, Davis Schley Bowie, failed to gain release via habeas corpus in Frederick County Circuit Court. Associate Judge Arthur D. Willard remanded Bowie to Dr. Ira A. Darling for continued hospital care, citing Bowie's schizophrenia and split personality. The hearing featured Bowie acting as his own counsel, defending alleged unsanitary conditions and negligent care. Dr. Darling and hospital staff testified Bowie’s illness required ongoing treatment under medical supervision. Bowie's father Donald Bowie and physician Dr. David Young corroborated details of commitment and condition. State’s Attorney Sherman P. Bowers represented the hospital.
